Hair Breakage or Something Else?

When people tell me they have a lot of breakage, I have to go into detective mode. Which could be super annoying because they're probably thinking, "I just told you I have a lot of breakage."

"Do you see split ends? Are there tapered ends (never cut)? Do you feel or hear hair breaking?"

Often, what people are really describing is how hair looks because lots of hairs are different lengths - they began growing at different times.

But sometimes you see certain diagnostic patterns. Let's say your hair looks like this - if you wear/wore it straight.

The blue arrow shows a section of shorter hairs all in one place. This is clearly breakage, right!? Are you rolling a round brush really tight here? Over-cooking with a flat iron? Pinning back that section with a serrated-edged bobby pin!?

Not so fast!

What if this is a postpartum woman? It could be post-postpartum hair loss regrowth.

I would ask this person some more questions about their skin and health in this situation. Because I'm a Certified Trichologist and Hair Analyst and that's my job.

This person might need a Dermatologist consult, not a lecture on their hairstyling practices. 😉

How about the person on the right? What's going on there?

Lots of breakage?
Why would just some hairs break and not others? What's going on with the pattern in length?

Is it breakage?
Can it be prevented?
Do you need to treat the hair? Treat the scalp? Both?

Here's the shameless self-promotion part of this post:
I can help you with these situations through a consultation via GFP Hair Density & Scalp Management. For these people, there are several possible outcomes and therefore several different ways to address the conditions.

Through consultation, we'll get right to the cause and learn whether you can prevent either of these situations (or others) from recurring, and how to do that.

I charge for the service - but I think your time is valuable too, and I can save you a lot of time and guesswork. And provide support to keep you motivated.
